Letter to EPA on Coal Emissions
May 13, 2011 at 2:07 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentDear Administrator Jackson:
I have listened in horror over the last decade as a rising squall of negative hate-speech is directed against those who strive to protect our planet–especially those in government agencies like EPA.
Many of the most critical words against the mission to protect the planet from deregulated energy, food, and chemical corporations come from so-called free-market economists and “libertarians” who want government to “get out of the way” of their economic exploitation for profit of our natural resources and society.
Surprisingly, the Christian Bible is clearly opposed to the anti-environmentalists (see Genesis 2:15, for one example).
Therefore, we must redouble our efforts not only to protect the planet and its resources for future generations, but to endeavor to pass these on in BETTER CONDITION than we ourselves inherited them from our progenitors.
Let the “free market deregulators” find their own planet to ravage for short term profit.
And, thank you for proposing the long overdue rule that would enforce the clean air act’s modern health standards. This rule will help to protect my family and community from the mercury emitted from coal-fired power plants. As many as 1 in 6 American women of childbearing age have enough mercury in their bodies to put their baby at risk of mercury poisoning, which causes brain damage, learning disabilities, and birth defects. Please adopt the strongest possible protections from mercury and other toxic air pollution emitted from coal fired power plants.

April 7, 2011 at 4:18 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentIt’s amazing how my life and my mind just run down like water down a rain spout and I’m at the bottom at the same time I’m at the top, but I’m really always at the bottom, the end, before I even get started! Rode the blue mountain bike to work and back. Feel like I’m falling forward onto my hands when I ride that thing.
Worked overtime four hours, including going up to the cafeteria and waiting twenty minutes for Claude to grill a thick, succulent salmon steak to perfection, and eating it, which took another twenty minutes. Then I went through a box of files from Martha Stewart’s family trust fund. Her real name is Martha Steryka. It seemed as if there was a huge flurry of activity as far as transferring her assets before she went to prison for illegal stock trades.
Every day the sorrow and disgust over the dissipation of the American character and culture becomes more and more sickening. Working at Weil just makes me feel more and more guilty all the time because, not only am I profiting from the unbridled greed and economic gluttony of my employers and their clients, but I do virtually nothing to help those less fortunate than myself, which is 99% of the humanity.
I sit around Mark’s office at Weil, surfing the internet and taking care of my personal business, paroxysms of fear, anger and helplessness surging through my consciousness because of the state of our politics and our social fabric, because of the people with no job, no money, no health care, and little look forward to. I think about kids living in ghetto apartments where the tv is always on. I think about my failures to write, to teach, to grow food.
No one has joined Peace Action Manhattan from watching my show. It’s a perfect zero.
Man, is that discouraging.
As seen over the weekend
March 29, 2011 at 6:47 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentIt permits the war industry to drain half of all state expenditures, generate trillions in deficits, and profit from conflicts in the Middle East we have no chance of winning. It permits corporations to evade the most basic controls and regulations to cement into place a global neo-feudalism. The last people who should be in charge of our food supply or our social and political life, not to mention the welfare of sick children, are corporate capitalists and Wall Street speculators. But none of this is going to change until we turn our backs on the Democratic Party, denounce the orthodoxies peddled in our universities and in the press by corporate apologists and construct our opposition to the corporate state from the ground up.
This was a long article by Hedges and full of the direct hit one liners that make his paragraphs and opinions so strong.

There’s Never Enough Time
March 25, 2011 at 3:06 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentI really like this blog, but it’s hard to figure out all the logistics, like how to post articles, videos, how to move around and command the features and spaces from the dashboard, how to change formats or themes.
I’m barely taking the time to type. On top of it all, these two dachshunds are hanging all over me.

March 10, 2011 at 12:43 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentIt’s a pattern that all the mundane, everyday events of life–like clocking in at work, riding the elevator, lighting my pipe, brushing my teeth, printing and filing at Weil, etc… — are framed within the emotional tenterhooks of some stress-inducing or absorbing circumstance
Last night I went to a little Peace Action meeting at Jerry’s. Oh! I forgot. I have to email John the flier. Jerry always supplies the group with refreshments and cookies and so forth, so I considered bringing something at the last minute. I parked my bike in front of his building about 25 minutes before the meeting and walked West on 86th Street to Columbus Avenue.
There I read a long detailed menu for a Korean health food deli and ice cream store. The menu was good. I decided to get a large chile with rice on the side. When I went in to order, though, there was a “cash only” sign on the register.
